The Understood You

For all you grammar-phobes, the understood you is the missing, but understood, part of a command. Like, "Go get my phone." The understood you is that you are saying, "you go get my phone" without saying you. Well, Pat and I were talking last night about Northerners. Nothing against them, but I work with a lot of them now. (They hire northerners like they're international staff at my IB magnet school.) I was talking about how more often than not, they come across as curt when they are stating a command. Southerners smother any statement with courtesy to be sure it's nice enough. Let's go back to the "get my phone" comment.

Southerner: "Honey, would you please go grab my phone for me, if it's not too much trouble."

Northerner: "Get my phone (biatch)."

Hence, as Pat phrased it, there tends to be the ever illusive, implied but not stated, "understood bitch" at the end of all commands from many a Northerner. Blunt is another way to put it.

**this post is not meant to be derogatory towards Northerners, really just a funny thought about the new grammatical phenomenon that is: the understood bitch. perhaps it will catch on like "in bed" at the end of fortune cookies.
